How do you do black girl bangs?

I love bangs.

Back in my straight-hair days, bangs were my trademark. I was all about the sheeny (though ever-thinning) side-swoop. It was deep to me. Deep enough that I co-signed on this black and white, looking-off-into-the-distance shot taken of me in college, featuring my sheeny bangs.

But these days, making "bangs" mainly consists of me laying my hand down flat at the front of my head and forcing the hair down. I've had mixed success with keeping it down using headbands and such.

I would love to occassionally rock the hair-in-face look. So tell me ladies, how do you do your black girl bang? How do you get the hair in front to stay down and look cute? Have you even been able to do them since you went natural? Please share.

cute! well when i want bangs i just do my flat twist/braids forward, just like a bang; i do either 2 or 3 and then just use my fingers to fluff/style when i undo them

hey! If I'm wearing a twist out, I twist the bang area forward and I get a silver clip so that the root is staying down just incase it moves while I sleep. When I'm doing a wash and go, as I apply product I pull my coilies downward. I use eco styler not sure if you use gel or not..but it works :D Good luck hun!

When I do a twistout or braidout I twist or braid the front few forward a little. I don't do them completely forward; it's maybe a 45 degree angle from the center part. When I untwist, my hair falls forward without doing anything else, kinda like Tanika Ray's hair. I think it's also because my hair is long enough that it naturally flops over. It takes me several days and a decent amount of fluffing to get the classic fro shape.

I've always hated bangs (on me) b/c I hate having hair in my face. I've dealt with acne since I was 11, so bangs have been a definite no-no.

On others though, I think they look cute. I've noticed some women will twist the front of their hair towards the front and that seems to work. Also, they'll wear a headband or scarf to make sure the bangs stay down.

roller set --> then I do a wrap and secure with a satin scarf. the hair that was flattened forward usually behaves itself like a side swept bang.

I do twists going forward like the other ladies said and then I maybe clip them down for a while before I untwist.

I do them all the time.
1) Flat bangs: with type 4 hair you better cornrow the flat part then twist it. when you reach the forehead and can not cornrow anymore, keep braiding for at least 1/4 inch before you twist if you want them to fall . i do not like my scalp to show so i cornrow very loosely and it ends up not looking like cornrows. So if you do not have any skills for cornrowing , you will be fine lol.
a)2 inches from the forehead: i usely do 6 cornrows twisted at the end. They are the ones i prefer. I keep them in for 2 weeks at least and i sometimes wear a twist-out in the front or pin them back

b) about 3 inches: i started doing it when i started your free strand buns. My hair was not long enought to pull the front back so i did a bigger section of bang. result: 4 cornrows twisted at the end. you can have a one side bang or you can have 2 twists at each side with the middle part showing ( just make it more obvious with a comb if you have blurred it). When the twist is getting old, i pin the end of each twist back in the rows to have a mini bang with this shape: uuuu . I love it

2) No flat part (2 inches 3 inches from the forehead) all twisted or braided

Good luck

by the way i think by wearing bangs, i realised how lucky i was to have shrinkage. my kinky hair alows me to have bangs above my eyes without cutting my 8 inch long front hair. Fantastic!

I usually do a braidout/twistout on the bang area or flat twist them to the side then undo it in the morning and I have a curly bang.

I second that @NowIamHappy. I do flat twists on my daughter's hair all of the time because she has to have her bangs. I spray her hair with leave in conditioner and water and apply a little shea butter for softness and sheen. Other times after a no poo day I use a little shea butter and aloe vera gel and do flat twists and untwist in the morning. Works everytime!

if im wearing twists or box braids, just pincurling 3-4 twists together works really well. when I take em down I fingerstyle and maybe swoop em to the side and clip with a bobby pin..

I love doing twist-out bangs as well, paired with a headband! http://public.fotki.com/NaturalChica/au-naturale-sept-2009/img-1286a-jpg.html

When my hair gets longer, I plan to do the "pin-under" bang look (kind of like Janelle Monae)!

I was a "bang-er" for life too I had them split in the middle and pushed on the side. I usually just two strand twist them apply a little bit of the (fantasia ic)aloe vera gel and work it through with my shea moisturizer. In the morning unravel by putting my finger between the twist and slide it down. This really just stretches the hair for me and gives it that chunky twist out look. Very gently separate it if you don't want two big strands and a fuller bang. If you want a more defined bang twist it up into smaller braids. :-)

If you want it to stop moving so much into your face you can put a bobby pin right at the roots where you have the part and slide it in very slowly so it doesn't look off and/or the section closest to your ear pin that with a bobby pin into your hair. So really just the middle of your bangs will move and easily go back into place with a quick flick of your head. :-)

(I'm still working on the technique myself so this isn't written in stone lol. If it doesn't work for you don't try to cut me :-) I run fast lol )

I would just add to all of these suggestions that, if you're willing to use a handheld dryer, you blast the roots of your bangs in the direction you want them to go. This is especially helpful after your twist-out is pretty much dry and you don't have to do it for very long.

I as well, just flat twist them to the front or which ever way I want them to fall
